5 Colorado Cities Included in Money Magazine’s Best Places to Live List

Money magazine recently released its list of America’s 100 “best places to live” and five of Colorado’s cities made it to the list. These cities include Fort Collins in the number six position, Highlands Ranch at number twelve, Broomfield at number nineteen, Loveland at number thirty-three and Arvada at number fifty-eight.

While the number six ranking does represent a bit of a downslide for Fort Collins, which was listed in the number one position on the same list in 2006, Money magazine still had many positive things to say about the Colorado city.

“Bikers and beers. In most parts of the country, those two elements may be reasons to move elsewhere,” the magazine said about Fort Collins. “But in the foothills of Colorado’s Front Range, bikers mean cyclists: Fort Collins has 29 miles of well-used trails. As for beers, this town has become a high-end microbrew mecca. New Belgium Brewery (maker of Fat Tire) is based in this entrepreneurial town, and competitors are moving in.”

The magazine goes on to list the Hewlett-Packard complex and Colorado State University, both of which are located in Fort Collins, as additional reasons for wanting to make Fort Collins home.

Highland Ranch, on the other hand, was included on the list largely because the community offers “over 8,100 acres of open space, 22 lush parks and activity possibilities that span from hiking to golf. This unincorporated area outside Denver offers the best of the Colorado outdoors.” Similarly, Broomfield achieved a high ranking because “With a prime location only 20 minutes from both Denver and Boulder, Broomfield is a safe, active community with a very strong school district and much for residents to enjoy.”

Overall, the small cities included on the list made it onto the list due to their affordable homes, strong local communities, low crime rates, good schools and similar factors. Furthermore, the list was comprised of small cities with populations ranging from 50,000 to 235,000. The complete top ten list included:

  • Eden Prairie, Minnesota
  • Columbia/Ellicott City, Maryland
  • Newton, Massachusetts
  • Bellevue, Washington
  • McKinney, Texas
  • Fort Collins, Colorado
  • Overland Park, Kansas
  • Fishers, Indiana
  • Ames, Iowa
  • Rogers, Arkansas

Last year, Money magazine released a “best places to live” list that focused on smaller towns and cities with populations of less than 50,000. Another Colorado town, Louisville, achieved the number one position on this list, while nearby Superior occupied the number thirteen position.
