Denver Metro Area Ranks as the Eleventh Best Place for Job Seekers
Posted by TheHomeCart.com on Tuesday, August 24th, 2010 at 7:49am.According to the career search engine Juju.com, Denver is the eleventh best place for job seekers to find work. The Denver metro area achieved the same ranking in August, though it is down from its 10th place ranking in June.
To determine its rankings, Juju.com took a closer look at the 50 largest cities in the country. The researchers then assigned a Job Search Difficulty Index, which is based on the ratio of unemployed workers within the market compared to the number of job openings being advertised within that market, to each of these cities.
After crunching the numbers, Juju.com determined that the Denver metro area has 2.63 unemployed workers for every advertised job to be advertised in August, resulting in an 11th place finish. The Denver metro area was ranked in the number 11 spot in both April and May, as well, with a ninth place finish in February and an eighth place finish in March, January and December.
Those metro areas that managed to edge out Denver include the following top ten metro areas:
- Washington, D.C. (1.18 unemployed workers per advertised job)
- >San Jose, CA (1.23 unemployed workers per advertised job)
- New York, NY (1.44 unemployed workers per advertised job)
- Baltimore, MD (1.67 unemployed workers per advertised job)
- Hartford, CT (2.04 unemployed workers per advertised job)
- Boston, MA (2.20 unemployed workers per advertised job)
- Oklahoma City, OK (2.30 unemployed workers per advertised job)
- San Antonio, TX (2.41 unemployed workers per advertised job)
- Salt Lake City, UT (2.42 unemployed workers per advertised job)
- Austin, TX (2.47 unemployed workers per advertised job)
On the other end of the spectrum, the bottom 10 metro areas included:
- Portland, OR (4.62 unemployed workers per advertised job)
- Memphis, TN (4.75 unemployed workers per advertised job)
- Birmingham, AL (4.90 unemployed workers per advertised job)
- St. Louis, MO (5.22 unemployed workers per advertised job)
- Sacramento, CA (5.50 unemployed workers per advertised job)>
- Los Angeles, CA (6.17 unemployed workers per advertised job)
- Riverside, CA (7.24 unemployed workers per advertised job)
- Las Vegas, NV (7.76 unemployed workers per advertised job)
- Detroit, MI (8.67 unemployed workers per advertised job)
- Miami, FL (9.41 unemployed workers per advertised job)
Clearly, there is still quite the discrepancy between opportunities available in those metro areas at the top of the list and those at the bottom. For those who live in Denver or who are thinking about moving to the area, however, the employment opportunities are certainly comforting.
