Denver Ranks at Top of Lists for Recent College Grads

Posted by TheHomeCart.com on Monday, July 26th, 2010 at 11:39pm.

According to a list released by Bloomberg Businessweek, the city of Denver is the eight best city of new college graduates in the country. The list, which was based on factors such as the cost of living, average annual pay, unemployment rates and entry-level employers available in the area, consisted of a total of 30 different cities that are considered to be a good place for recent college grads to live.

“Thanks to jobs for mortgage specialists, securities and commodity brokers, and real estate and mutual fund managers, Denver has earned the title of ‘Wall Street of the Rockies,’” the Bloomberg Businessweek notes. “While the Mile High City is best known for its air transportation, telecommunications, aerospace, and manufacturing sectors, the fields of nursing and shipping are picking up. In fact, nursing and health-care jobs are in abundance on AfterCollege. Qwest Communications is the city’s only Fortune 500 company. Still, views of the Rocky Mountains and entertaining sports teams help make Denver appealing to college grads.”

As Austin Biz Journals notes, the Denver metro area is actually home to eight different companies to be included on the most recent Fortune 500 list. These include:

  • Qwest Communications International Inc.
  • Dish Network Corp
  • Liberty Global Inc
  • Liberty Media Corp
  • Newmont Mining Corp
  • Ball Corp
  • CH2M Hill
  • Western Union Co
Furthermore, DaVita Inc was recently added to the list, though Qwest will be dropped from the list after its acquisition by CenteryLink Inc is completed.

The complete top ten list of cities to be included in the list were:
  • Houston, Texas
  • Washington, D.C.
  • Dallas, Texas
  • Atlanta, Georgia
  • Austin, Texas
  • Minneapolis, Minnesota
  • Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
  • Denver, Colorado
  • Columbus, Ohio
  • Fort Worth, Texas

This wasn’t the first time Denver ranked at the top of a list of best places for college grads to live. In fact, Apartments.com and CareerRookie.com ranked the city as the third best city for new college grads back in May. This list was largely based on the average cost for renting a one bedroom apartment and the number of jobs available to people with less than one year of experience. Clearly, there are numerous reasons for recent college grads to take a closer look at the city of Denver for its scenic beauty as well as for its opportunities for launching a successful and rewarding career.
