Visiting Historic Denver
Posted by TheHomeCart.com on Sunday, September 5th, 2010 at 4:52pm.Denver is one of the most historically rich cities in the entire nation. From the gold rush days through the present, Denver has made its mark on the Western landscape. There have been highs and lows, from ghost towns to economic booms, and the Centennial State has over and over again shown its resilience. Visiting historic Denver sites can give you a real feel for the spirit of this amazing city.
Where it All Began
If you really want to see historic Denver, you need to start in LoDo (lower downtown). This is the old center of Denver proper, and features a number of historical sites. You can even stay at one of the oldest hotels in the city, the Oxford Hotel, and visit the Oxford Cruise Room, which is Denver’s oldest bar.
You’ll also find Rockmount Ranchwear, which invented snap-button shirts. The one and only retail location is located right here in LoDo.
You might also check out the Wynkoop Brewing Company, which is a staple of downtown Denver. They’re the host of the Great American Beer Festival, too, so if you plan it right you might be able to take part in that event. The Wynkoop has the honor of being Denver’s first brewery.
The Buckhorn Exchange is worth a visit, too. Denver’s first saloon and restaurant features more than 500 mounted and stuffed animals and birds, including a two-headed calf.
Four Mile Historic Park
One of the best places to get a feel for the frontier Denver experience is Four Mile Historic Park. This Park offers historical reenactment and a number of interactive activities that can put you right in the middle of Denver as it grew from a small town in the mountains to one of the West’s most iconic cities.
Denver Story Trek
Denver has one of the most active historical preservation societies in the nation. For your visit to historic Denver, you can make use of the vast resources put together by this nonprofit organization. Denver Story Trek, located at http://www.denverstorytrek.org/, provides you with materials you can use to put together your own self-guided tour of Denver. Whether you want to visit those historic locations in LoDo, or whether you want to put together a tour that visits Denver’s historic contributions to arts and culture, you can do it from here.
