More About Broomfield County

The City and County of Broomfield is a prominent suburb, and occupies a prominent tier on the communities list in the Denver Metropolitan Area. Broomfield County is situated in the northern metro area between Denver and Boulder along the Boulder Turnpike, north through the I-25 corridor. For commuters and residents this means a short 20-minute drive to either Denver or Boulder, and less than 40 minutes to Denver International Airport.

The municipality of Broomfield was incorporated in 1961 in the southeastern corner of Bounder County It received its name from the broomcorn, a type of sorghum used for making brooms and whiskbrooms, grown in the area. Over the next three decades, the city grew through annexations, many of which crossed the County line into four adjacent counties: Adams, Boulder, Jefferson and Weld. In the 1990s, city leaders began to push for the creation of a separate County to avoid the inefficiencies of dealing with four separate court districts, four different County seats (each a considerable distance away), and four separate County sales tax bases. Broomfield reasoned that it could provide services more responsively under its own County government, and sought an amendment to the Colorado State Constitution to create a new County. The amendment passed in 1998, after which a three-year transition period followed. On November 15, 2001, Broomfield County became the 64th, newest, and smallest County in Colorado.

At the turn of the century, Broomfield itself was a little town in the area around 120th Ave. and Wadsworth. Grain elevators, a grocery, hotel, bank, drew the farmers in the area together. By 1961 the city had incorporated, and the population had grown to 6,000. Today Broomfield’s estimated population is close to 45,000, and the city and County spans nearly 33.6 square miles.Residents of Broomfield County enjoy expanding retail operations, multiple social and cultural activities, and a solid economic base rooted in the high-tech industry, and business park revenue.
