More About Denver County

Denver County is located at the center of the Front Range urban cooridor between the Rocky Mountains, to the west, and the Colorado High Plains, to the east. The City and County of Denver is surrounded by only three other counties:Adams County to the north and east, Arapahoe County to the south and east, and Jefferson County to the west.

The city itself began, in 1858, as little more than a collection of dusty buildings on a long, grassy plain with a few cottonwood trees on the Platte river banks. It was, in those early years, located in Arapahoe County. By 1901 the people of the "Mile High City" believed that Denver should govern herself and they left Arapahoe County to form the "City and County of Denver." A year later the state recognized Denver as a separate County. In the one hundred six years since, Denver has had a penchant for “spilling over” into the surrounding counties. As an example, Denver owns the Mountain that's home to the Winter Park Ski resort, sixty five miles away.

Denver's economy is based partially on its geographic position and its connection to some of the major transportation systems of the country. Because Denver is the largest city within 600 miles in any direction, it has become a natural location for storage and distribution of goods and services to the Mountain States. Denver is also approximately halfway between some of the larger cities of the midwest like Chcago and St. Louis and their counterparts on the West Coast like Los Angeles and San Fransisco, another good reason for it be a major nation distribution center. Over the years, the city has been home to other large corporations in the central United States, making Denver a key trade point for the nation.

Denver is is a consolidated city and County. It is the capital, and the most populous city in Colorado. The Denver downtown district is located immediately east of the confluence of Cherry Creek with the South Platte River, approximately 15 miles east of the Rocky Mountain foothills. Often refered to as the financial capital of the Mountain West, the city has the 10th largest central business district in the United States.

The most recent census estimates the population of the City and County of Denver was right at 600,000 ranking it 26th in population for U.S cities. It is also the second largest city in the Mountain West after Phoenix. As of 2006, Denver has over 200 parks, from small mini-parks all over the city to the flagship 314 acre City Park.
