More About Douglas County

Positioned in a huge valley, south of Denver and north of Colorado Springs, Douglas County has enjoyed incredible growth recently, ranking as the number one County in the nation for population growth on a percentage basis. Douglas County is the eighth most populous of Colorado's 64 counties. This is by far one of Colorado's most scenic counties. Douglas County has approximately 844 square miles of mountains, foothills and plains, and enjoys unparalled peak-to-peak views of Colorado's high mountain ranges.

Douglas County was one of the original 17 counties created in the Colorado Territory by the Colorado Territorial Legislature in November, 1861. The County was named in honor of U.S. Senator Stephen A. Douglas of Illinois, who died five months before the County was created. The County seat was originally Franktown, but was moved to Castle Rock in 1874. Although the County's boundaries originally extended eastward to the Kansas state border, in 1874 most of the eastern portion of the County became part of Elbert County.

Today Douglas County has a population of 217,000 residents and contains four incorporated municipalities: Larkspur, Lone Tree, Castle Rock, and Parker Approximately 73% of the population lives in unincorporated areas. The County seat is Castle Rock Douglas County is an ideal mix of rural and suburban communities, village centers, and large plots of open space including ranches, greenbelts, public parks and national forest lands. With excellent schools, beautiful landscape, a thriving economy and scenic neighborhoods, Douglas County is an outstanding place to live, work and raise a family.

Schools are rated generally high in the area. Douglas County is served by Douglas County School District, the third-largest school district in Colorado. In addition to traditional neighborhood schools, the district includes six charter schools, four option schools and a school which offers classes online.
