More About Elbert County
Elbert County encompasses 1,854 sq miles and has a population of approximately 22,000. Nestled in the scenic areas on the east side of Denver and Colorado Springs it has become one of the nations fastest growing counties. Despite its rural setting, Elbert County is part of the Denver-Aurora Metropolitan Statistical Area and the Denver-Aurora-Boulder Combined Statistical Area. Most of Elbert County's residents commute to the larger Metropolitan Areas to work. The towns of Elizabeth, Kiowa and Simla are incorporated, the smaller towns of Agate, Elbert and Matheson remain unincorporated.
In 1849 the Pike's Peak gold rush saw hordes of miners andsettlers stream across Kansas for the gold fields of Colorado. One of the more controversial routes was the Smoky Hill Trail, which began in Kansas and continued westward to the Divide, bisecting present-day Elbert County.
The 21st most populated of the 64 counties in Colorado, Elbert County was created on February 2nd, 1874, from the eastern portions of Douglas County. The County was subsequently enlarged to include part of northern Greenwood County after Greenwood's dissolution, and originally extended south and east of its present boundaries, reaching the Kansas state line. In 1889, Elbert County was reduced to its modern size when its eastern portions were taken to create Lincoln, Kit Carson, and Cheyenne counties. The County was named for Samuel Hitt Elbert, the Governor of the Territory of Colorado when the County was formed. Today Elbert County consists of 1,854 square miles of hills, rolling plains, creeks and springs, ranches, farms, towns, people and the rich history that goes with them.
Early settlers of Elbert County quickly gave up on the idea of striking it rich in the Colorado gold fields, farther west, when they came upon the large forests of Ponderosa pine growing along the divide, and quickly recognized this as a source of lumber for the growing town of Denver. Several sawmills were established, drawing more settlers to the area to work, to farm and to ranch. Today, there are several farms and ranches in Elbert County that belong to the same families who originally entered them as homesteads.
