More About Jefferson County

The fourth most populous of the 64 Counties in Colorado is Jefferson County. Located along the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains, Jefferson County with a population estimated to be about 540, 000, is part of the Denver metropolitan area. It is known as the Gateway to the Rocky Mountains, and the city of Golden is the County seat.

In July 1858, gold was discovered along the South Platte River in Arapahoe County (in present day Englewood). This discovery precipitated the Pike's Peak Gold Rush. The need for an organized local government began about this same time since now droves of gold-seeking settlers had come West. The population in the Jefferson Territory had risen from 200 to 3,500 in just two years. Many residents of the mining region felt disconnected from the remote territorial governments of Kansas and Nebraska, so they voted to form their own Territory of Jefferson in 1859. The following month, the Jefferson Territorial Legislature organized 12 Counties for the new territory, including Jefferson County.

The Jefferson Territory never received federal sanction, but in 1861 U.S. President James Buchanan signed an act organizing the Territory of Colorado, and that same year the Colorado General Assembly organized the 17 original Counties of Colorado including a new Jefferson County. In 1908, the southern tip of Jefferson County was transferred to Park County, reducing Jefferson County to its present length of 54 miles. Several annexations by the City and County of Denver and the 2001 consolidation of the City and County of Broomfield have removed eastern portions of the County.

A major employer in Jefferson County is the large Coors Brewing Company in Golden. Also, the state-supported Colorado School of Mines is located here, offering programs in mining and engineering. Once an agricultural and mining area, Jefferson County, Colorado today is a thriving suburban, business, industrial and residential community.

This is where the great plains meet the Rocky Mountains with some of the most magnificent scenery in the country.
