Sedalia Homes and Living

Before 1859 only the Ute and Arapahoe Indians and an occasional trapper crossed the Plum Creeks in Douglas County, in the area which was to become Sedalia. In 1859, D.C. Oakes started a lumber mill on West Plum Creek, cutting and shipping the finished lumber to Denver by horse and wagon. People began to homestead shortly thereafter.

Today you will find ranchers, commuters, shopkeepers and restaurant workers; executives and professionals; people who work in trucking, building & farm supply, and retired people happy with their Sedalia CO homes. The varied terrain of Sedalia accommodates a wide variety of interests. From the relatively flat fields along US Highway 87 to the foothills of the Front Range, you will find all kinds of homesites, on postage-stamp lots to spacious wooded acres with mountain, foothills, and even some city lights views.

Not far east of the town center you will find , Cherokee Ranch & Castle a former 3,000 acre cattle ranch that is now preserved as open space. The showpiece of the ranch is a replica of a 16th-century Scottish castle, built in 1924. It is open for tours and has a notable collection of art and artifacts. A small herd of prize Santa Gertrudis cattle, brought to the area from Texas by the last owner of the ranch, still roams the range.

The population of Sedalia is about 3,600 people, living in about 1,600 homes. Some 200 of these are rentals. Home prices in Sedalia extend across a wide spectrum. Despite the aggressive development taking place on all sides of Sedalia, residents still live in a rural setting, some on small lots, others on spacious wooded acreage with spectacular views of the Front Range. As a result, home prices in Sedalia extend across a wide spectrum, as varied as the people who live and work in this diverse and scenic place.

Friendly restaurants and service providers are quick to let you know there really is a town, albeit a small one, and that the hometown feeling you’ll experience in this historic crossroads community is genuine.
