About Speer/Governor’s Park, Colorado

Back at the turn of the century Denver adopted what was known as The City Beautiful Movement, and then mayor Robert Speer was one of the program’s most ardent supporters. Speer initiated several projects that added new landmarks to the city’s landscape, including Civic Auditorium, site of the 1908 Democratic National Convention, The Civic Center, and the Denver Natural History Museum. During the mayor’s tenure many of the city’s remaining dirt streets were paved, and an urban forestry program distributed well over 100,000 free shade trees to city residents. The Georgian Revival mansion was built in 1908 and deeded to the state in 1959.
