About Union Station, Colorado

The proliferation of railroads into Denver brought many travelers, but also resulted in numerous railroad depots around the city. To aid confused travelers, the Denver Union Depot was built to consolidate the many stations. On May 13, 1881, Union Depot opened. In March 1894, fire destroyed the tower and the southwest portion of the building. Almost immediately reconstruction began in a similar Romanesque style, one that both visitors and residents still enjoy today. When passenger trains were a popular way to travel, Union Station saw sixty to eighty daily arrivals and departures and as many as a million passengers a year. After World War II the popularity and frequency of train travel began to wane. Today Union Station services Amtrak’s California Zephyr line, the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad's Ski Train, as well as the C-Line and E-Line RTD light rail routes and several bus lines. Union Station is in the planning stages for another major revival, as a part of the FasTracks transit expansion plan for the Denver Metropolitan Area. Beginning in 2016, the station will serve as a major transit hub for the city of Denver, serving many light rail and commuter rail lines for the metro area.
